Obituary, Taranaki Herald, Volume LX, Issue 143708, 2 February 1912
It is our duty to-day to record the death of another of the pioneer settlers of Taranaki in the person of Mr. Alfred Marsh, who passed away at the hospital on Thursday evening after a long illness. The deceased, who was eighty years of age, came out with his family in the Timandra, arriving here on February 24, 1842, so that he was a settler of just upon seventy years’ standing. During the Maori war he served in the Militia as a bugler. After the conclusion of the war he resumed his business as a wheelwright, but in the early seventies, he commenced farming in the Mangorei district, and was one of the earliest and most successful of the farms of that district. His residence, near the Junction Road, which he had occupied up to the time of his death, is a well-known land mark throughout the district, and the view to he obtained from it is a magnificent one. The gentleman was an ingenious mechanic, and his services were much in request for the construction and erection of water-wheels. He also showed great skill with all kinds of farm and harvesting machinery.Socially, he was hail fellow well met to all, being of a cheery and genial disposition, and could wile away many an hour by recounting his recollections of the early days in Taranaki. Up to a few years since, he took a keen interest in school committee work, and he also occupied a seat on the directorate of the Mangorei Co-operative Dairy Company for about ten years, where his practical knowledge proved of good service to his fellow settlers. His well-known figure will he much missed by those who knew him best. He leaves a widow, three sons, Mr. George Marsh and Mr. M. J. Marsh, of Egmont Village, Mr. Arthur Marsh, of Junction Road, and one daughter, Mrs. John Allen, of Tikorangi. His eldest son, Mr. Alfred Marsh, of Egmont Village, predeceased him a few years ago. There are also seventeen grandchildren, and five great-grand-children.
