Francis Hogben (Marsh) Clayson was born in 1838 in Lyminge, Shepway District, Kent, England. [1] [2] [3] to Henry Marsh and Mary-Collins (Cook) Marsh. Frances middle name of Hogben is after her grandmother, Alice Hogben, who married William Cook, then James Foulser. [4]
She married Elgar Clayson in Elham, Kent, England on 12 October 1856, aged 19. [5]
On 16 Nov 1873 she left London for Australia on the migrant ship the "Southern Belle" on a 3½ month journey to Queensland via Tasmania. The ship narrowly avoiding being shipwrecked. The ship struck a gale and was disabled in Keppel Bay. [6]
On board with Elgar and Frances were their children Ann, Sophia, Mary Elizabeth, Isaac Alfred, Amelia, Agnes, Elgar’s sister Ann, her husband John Pattison and their children John, Anne and Frederick. They arrived in Rockhampton on 6 March 1874. [7] [8] The Claysons did have another daughter, Clara, but she had died aged 5 in 1866.
Frances Hogben Marsh Clayson died on 2 Apr 1891 in Queensland, Australia and was buried in the Eton Cemetery, Eton, Queensland. [4] [9] [10]
