Biography

Maria was the second wife if Christopher Davids (Davis). Her origin is uncertain. Her patronymic name of Martens or Martensen indicates that her father had the first name Marten.

She is estimated to have married Christopher Davids by about 1660, probably in Albany, where church records are not available for the years before 1683.

Church Records

Children's baptisms
  1. 1663 May 3. Christoffel Davids, ____ Martens. Abraham. Wit.: Evert Pels, Geertruy Andries.
  2. 1665 Jan 25. Christoffel Davids, Maria Martensen. Debora. Wit.: Geertruy Andriesen. [1]

Research Notes

LNAB is Martens. This is the name for her on the earliest church record we have so far, and unlike Martensen it is a proper form for a feminine patronymic. - Smith-62120 03:01, 1 June 2020 (UTC)

The connected parents, Martin Hendricksz Beekman and Susanna Jans, born respectively in 1624 and 1640, were too young to be the parents of this woman.

Beekman-372 and Martens-1384 appear to represent the same person because: Same person. The only records we know of for her call her by a patronymic name. Not even clear she was a Beekman.

Martensen-34 and Martensen-2 appear to represent the same person because: same first name, last name, spouse, birth state, death location.

Disconnecting Davids-114 as a son; they were a French family and not related to Christopher Davis.

Martens-530 and Martensen-2 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest maternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks! Merging into the name that appears in records, in full.

Martensen-8 and Martensen-2 appear to represent the same person because: they were in an unmerged match & the New Netherland Settlers Approval System (http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:New_Netherland_Settlers_-_Approval_System) now has them marked "Green" (NNS Category) and "Orange" (Merge Pending), indicating that the two are ready to be merged. Thanks!

Maria Martensen-2 currently has a birth here of abt 1640, which looks to be good. She was the much younger second wife of Christopher, whom she married abt. 1660, after Christopher's first wife Cornelia died in 1657.

But the earliest children of Maria as currently attached here are clearly in error, and by the matches, those earliest ones belong instead to Cornelia. The current range of birth is 1637-1675. So it would obviously make sense that all the children born by 1657 belong to Cornelia instead.

However, it might be best to first merge the profiles of Maria, and Cornelia, before moving any of the children around. That way, it will be easier to study the desecndant tree after merge, to figure out the true duplicate children, and which mother is correct.

The birth on this Maria Martensen-8 is currently set at abt. 1616, a generation too early. She was insted born abt. 1640, the much younger second wife of Christopher, whom she married abt 1660, after Christopher's first wife Cornelia died in 1657.

Maria's attached son Isaac here is also in error, b 164os. He would instead have to be a son of Cornelia. But there may be a younger Isaac who is indeed Maria's son, as shows in a matching profile with much later dates. More study will need to be done first to determine that descent of Isaac's line, either from Maria or Cornelia.

But I would recommend to start by first simply changing the birth here to abt 1640, in line with the matching profiles.

Martensen-2 and Beekman-73 are not ready to be merged because: Beekman-73 shows parents (Dad's name is Marten Beekman; Martensen could be based on patronymic).

Beekman-73 and Martensen-2 appear to represent the same person because: The Beekman-73 profile is for Maria Martensen who was the wife of Christopher Davis/Davids. While some have speculated, it is uncertain whether she was a Beekman - evidence would need to be provided.
