Biography: "Martin’s grandfather, Sir William Martin of Athel-hampton, Dorset, married into the Paulet family, and no doubt it was the Marquess of Winchester (who shared the patronage at Bere Alston equally with Lord Mountjoy) who brought Martin into Parliament for the borough in 1586. No activity has been recorded in his name for the 1586 Parliament, but a ‘Mr. Martin’ was the victim of an arrest by one William White. This episode may refer to Nicholas Martin, or to Henry Martyn. Named in the 1560 charter of the Exeter merchant adventurers, Martin and his brothers traded in fruit, soap and wine, with the Netherlands and France. He died in March 1599, and was buried at St. Petrock’s, Exeter."[1]
Nicholas was born about 1542. Nicholas Martin ... He passed away in March 1598-9. He was the second son of Sir Richard Martin [Mayor of Exeter] by his second wife Julian. He left a will, which should have survived at Canterbury, and needs investigating.

The sources above correctly state that his grandfather was Sir William Martyn of Athelhampton. Sir William's son (by his second marriage to Christian Poulett/Paulet) was Richard Martin of Exeter, correctly cited as Nicholas's father in the tree above. So this Nicholas Martin was most likely born in Exeter, though if there is evidence that he was for some reason born back in the ancestral home at Athelhampton, that would be very interesting to hear. There is also separately Sir Nicholas Martyn, who was born at Athelhampton in 1530 and died there in 1596, he was the one who married Margaret Wadham. One source for this is the W G Willis Watson book "The House of Martin"
Very confused!!!!! I think that there are three of them Margaret Wadham Wadham-52 and Margaret Wadham -47 which have a merge pending and then there is Wadham-40 which is, I think, the one this Nicholas is linked to (mind is a bit boggled so you need to check! )
He was not the father of Frances Martyn that married Thomas White of Fiddleford .She was the daughter of Nicholas Martyn and Margaret Wadham of Athelhampton re . http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1558-1603/member/martin-nicholas-1599
