Biography

John J. Martin was born about 1903 in Ohio to parents John Martin and Mary (Kohut) Martin.^[1]

In the 1910 census John (age 7) was the son of John Martin in Cleveland Ward 13, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States. He was attending school.^[2]

In the 1920 census John (age 17) was the single son of John Martin in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States. He was out of school and working for the telephone company as a laborer.^[3]

John married Mary Elitchko. There seems to be 2 marriage records 6 months apart. One on 24 June 1924 in Monroe, Michigan and the second on 4 November 1924 in Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States. When they married, John was 19 and Mary was 16 years old.^[4][5]

John and Mary had 3 children:

In the 1930 census John (age 25) was the married head of household in Cleveland (Districts 1-250), Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States. He is working as a baker in a bakery shop. John and Mary were renting their home on East 50th Stree, and had 2 sons at home, too young for school.^[9]

In the 1940 census John (age 41) was the married head of household in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States. According to the census, he finished his second year of high school before dropping out, and worked as a foreman on a drainage project for the Works Progress Administration (WPA). He and his wife Mary were renting their home on West 6th Street, and their 3 children were attending school^[10]

In the 1950 census John (age 45), was the married head of household in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio, United States. John and Mary were living on West 58th Street with all 3 of their children. John was working as a butcher in the Meat Market, and their 2 sons were working as underground electricians for the Cables Company.^[11]

John passed away in April of 1970.^[12]
