Mary was the oldest daughter, and second child of William and Cordelia Martin born in 1833 in Winchelsea, England . [1] She was six years old when the "Coromandel" sailed from Plymouth on the 14th June, 1838, along with her parents and three siblings William 9, Ann 4, and Sarah 18 months old, the journey lasted 3.5 months, landing in Sydney on 2nd October, 1838.
Like the rest of the family, Mary spent her early years on the Williams River, NSW. Here she met and married Thomas Avery, in 1853.[2] The following year they moved to the Manning, living at Tinonee, before buying land in Taree.
Thomas established a flour mill on a small stream, where Fotheringham Park is now. The stream became known as Mill Creek, the mill was a landmark for many years, disease affecting the local wheat crop ultimately closed the mill.
The Avery's then moved across the Manning River to Carter's Creek, then finally at Purfleet, where they purchased part of the McLennan Estate, spending the rest of their lives there, both dying on their property in 1909.[3][4]
