Biography

William was born 15 June 1792 and baptised in St Marylebone, Middlesex on 8 July 1792 the son William and Charlotte Martin.[1]

William Martin the younger married Elizabeth Weston by licence on 17 March 1818 and then in Ringmer church on 23 March 1818.[2] The marriage was witnessed by William Weston, Elizabeth's father, given she was a minor, and by Susannah Martin, William's sister.

The licence states

consent of William Weston, her father : bondsmen,
said W.M and William Weston of Ringmer, yeoman.
17 March 1818. [S.M pec.]

William and Elizabeth and some of the younger children emigrated tin the United States of America in about 1845.

Their son Mark Miller also emigrated there in about 1850, and was naturalised in 1856.

In the 1850 US Census William, aged 57, was living at Syracuse Ward 3, Onondaga, New York State. His occupation was given as carpenter, and with him were living wife Elizabeth (age 50) and children George, Joseph, Edmund, Frank and Louisa.[3]

In the 1855 New York State Census William, aged 63, was living at Syracuse City, Ward 5, Onondaga, New York. With him were living wife Elizabeth (age 59) and children Frederick, George, Joseph, Edmund and Louisa.

In the 1860 US Census William, aged 67, was living at the Town of Pompey, Onondaga, New York State. His occupation was given as farmer, and with him were living wife Elizabeth (age 59) and children Joseph, Edmund and Louisa.[4]

William died on 3 July 1865 in Syacuse, Onondaga, New York State and his death announced in the Eastbourne Gazette in England as follows.

3 July 1865 in Syracuse, Death of Mr W Martin formerly of Ringmer who emigrated to America about 1845.[5]

Research notes

  • Search of GRO reveals that Elizabeth's maiden name was WESTON
  • William the younger implies his father was also William but the 1841 census says he is NOT of Sussex, and there appears to be just one census for him in 1841.
  • Birth dates of children taken from a Family Bible (Fenner)
  • By 1868 the marriage certificate of his son Henry back in England indicated that his father had died.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Martin-78529 and Martin-16897 appear to represent the same person because: These William's are the same person and married Elizabeth Weston in 1818. Later baptisms of their 13 children show (using GRO) their mother's maiden name is WESTON. Their children include Charlotte born in 1820,

Hi Colin,

Thankyou for your contact - can you please confirm your William Martin is not associated with a birth in Surrey. We have to be sure someone born is the same one who marries... Thankyou!

Thank you Janet. From the 1841 census we know William was NOT born in Sussex. Surrey seemed the most obvious county as WT error message suggested I put in a birth location, but otherwise I hadn't looked further than that. The 1841 census also links William to Elizabeth and 9 of their children, and their baptisms in Ringmer between 1818 and 1841. I have just seen you have added William's father this morning so whilst St Marylebone is definitely not in Sussex how do you know they are related, where is the source provided in William's profile to confirm that? From the 1841 census I agree his age range is between 45 and 49 so born between 1791 and 1796, so that would tally. But I happy to change birth location of Martin-78529 with proof of St Marylebone if confirmed as location. Thanks.

Regards Colin, Sussex team member.

The best research has been done- and it is extensive by close family members of the Ringmer area in Sussex who had access to records dating back to Henry Martin 1714 Miller in Ringmer - the father of William Martin senior - who I just put on the tree as Father of William Martin 1792. If you can find contact for Roger Fenner he can give you all the information.. I have some info - does this have my direct email without putting it out there ? Look for the email attached to Arkitek hej architect in NSW - it is huge as he has traced every descendant of Henry Martin 1714- he found us as he was looking for where our lot went.. They are connected to London many times.. multiple marriages and births.. even my nutty ancestor said he was born in London..
