In 1686 at Port Royal, Madeleine aged 12, was living with her mother, Jeanne PELTRET [sic], aged 45, the widow of Barnabe MARTIN, and six siblings: Marie, aged 18, Rene, aged 15, Jeanne, aged 10, Estienne [sic], aged 8, and two other children. They were living on 4 arpents of cultivable land with 6 cattle and 4 hogs.[3]
Madeleine married François Coste (born in Martigues, Provence, France) around 1695 in Port Royal. [1]
Daughter Marie's marriage on 5 Feb 1714 at Port Royal validates Madeleine Martin's relationship as a parent and her relationship to her spouse, Francois Coste.[4]
The family settled in Port-Royal (renamed Annapolis Royal in 1710 by the British) as shown in the censuses from 1698 to 1714. In 1707 they owned only 1 1/4 arpents of land and a small quantity of livestock. Land was becoming scarce in Annapolis Royal. French authorities encouraged Acadians to move to French-controlled territory. By 1716 François and Madeleine were living in Ile Royale (now Cape-Breton) and were given 1 year of rations by the King who wished to encourage colonisation. They lived a long life on Ile Royale and seemed to be doing well. He worked as a carpenter and a navigator and owned a boat for commerce, had servants and hired fishermen and/or sailors.
Madeleine died about 1756 in Port Toulouse, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. [1]

Maternal relationship is confirmed through Mitochondrial DNA test results on Family Tree DNA. Vincent Courtney FTDNA kit # 654156, (a grandchild of Marie Sarah “Sadie” Fillis) and his maternal line cousin UNK (a great grandchild of Flavie Voisine), FTDNA kit # 80680, have an Genetic Distance = 1 in HVR2 at C456T, thereby confirming their direct maternal lines back to their most-recent common ancestor who is Perrine Bourg the 9x great grandmother of Vincent Courtney and the 11x grandmother of UNK.
