He was born 6 Aug 1758 (DoB in register) and baptised at St John the Evangelist, Westminster (the parish where seven of his siblings were also baptised) on 20 Aug 1758, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth Martin. [1]
He appears throughout the 1780s, right up to his death in 1809, renting land at Lambeth, Surrey, renting land assessed at a rentable value of £7 per annum from a James Wright at Lambeth. [2][3][4][5] In the 1798 land redemption tax records for Surrey, he again appears, on the same page of the register as his brothers, Robert, Michael and Samuel, as well as his widowed mother. [6] At the 1810 tax records, the first after his death, his lands appear as "late Edward Martin". [7]
He married wife Mary Ann sometime around 1787, They baptised twelve children at St Mary at Lambeth, Surrey, the first, Edward Richard Samuel Martin on 16 Sep 1788. [8]
Edward seems to have been a publican. At the marriage of his son Samuel, in 1840, as the groom's father, he is named as Edward Martin, publican. [9] He appears in the Surrey licence victuallers lists between 1787 through to 1807. [10][11]
He died in 1809, being buried at Lambeth, Surrey 5 Feb 1809.The register states he is of Washway, Kennington, Surrey. [12] Wife Mary Ann outlived him by twenty five years. She died in 1836, leaving a will as of Ann Martin of No2 William street, Kennington. [13]
