Biography

Son of Francis and Emma (Hazen) Martin. Brother of Raymond and Delbert Martin.

Clifford married on November 10, 1920. His wife, Opal Wave Brunton, had married previously to William Ehsinger on June 27, 1915. They had a daughter, Esther, in November 1916, before divorcing in 1919. She then married Dennis Brogan on July 14, 1919. That marriage ended in January 1920. Clifford was her third husband, and she would be Clifford's first wife. They had a daughter, Ruth (Martin) Nesvik, who was born on August 23, 1921. Opal kept the Martin name until she married George Kewi of Lawrence, Indiana on March 14, 1932. Lastly, she married George E. Preston on October 11, 1940. He maintained a home at 951 East Washington Street in Greensburg which is but a block away from where Clifford Martin lived (and died in 1970). Opal (died in 1978) and George (died in 1983) are buried at Union Presbyterian Cemetery near her native Forest Hill, Indiana.

Clifford's second marriage was to Ethel Mae (nee Ratekin) VanNatta. Born in Decatur County, she was raised and had married in Rush County where a daughter and two sons were born. Apparently, Ethel was pregnant when marrying Clifford on July 2, 1928. That child, Bessie Mae Martin, was born prematurely and died on November 19 at the Decatur County Memorial Hospital. Perhaps Ethel's heart was too weak to carry the child to full term or perhaps the premature birth caused her heart problem. She died on November 25, 1928, due to cardiac insufficiency. Her funeral was two days later. Ethel had lived 26 years, 11 months, and 1 day. She and Bessie lie next to Clifford, and they are buried near his parents at South Park Cemetery in Greensburg.

His last marriage was to Elizabeth Hellman on February 18, 1946, with no indication of how long the marriage lasted. For sure, it was over by 1961. Clifford remained in the house he inherited from his father (in 1950) at 815 East Washington Street in Greensburg. He continued his father's business of selling antique furniture until his death.
