Biography

Charles Martin was born in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1745.^[1] Charles was born in January.^[2]. He was the son of Thomas Martin (born 1714),

He resided in Edgefield County, South Carolina in 1787 and 1890.

He removed to South Carolina in 1784 from Albermarle County, Virginia. Charles is listed in the 1790 census of Edgefield District, South Carolina. In the household were himself, his wife, six sons (one over 16), and three daughters and 24 slaves. Two daughters are known to have married Thomas and James Cobb in Virginia prior to this time. Son, Thomas also was married to Hester Rountree and Abram may have been.

Charles Martin received a grant of land in Abbeville District (96 Dist.) February 4, 1782 (Book P. 21 203). He acquired additional land and died in Abbeville County in 1808. (County Records). Charles Martin purchased land in Anderson county, South Carolina (Book I page 45-46?). 150 acres more or less on Beaver Creek, dated January 3, 1804. Witnessed by Johanna Martin and Sephon Willil. Proven by Johanna Martin November 1, 1805. Recorded August 7, 1807. Johanna Martin was probably Anna Martin, wife of Abram Martin son of Charles Martin. Abram Martin died about 1809.

Family

He married Martha "Patsy" Moon.^[3] Patsy Moon, daughter of Jacob Moon (born 1727) and Mildred Cobb (b 1732), was born about 1751 (her parents married in 1749). She died in 1802.(DAR-grs|A079193|Jacob Moon|March 23, 2017). They were Martin married in 1766.^[4]

Charles and Patsy's children included:

Military Service

Sergeant Charles Martin, served in Moylan's Cavalry, transferred to infantry, August 19, 1777. ^[5]

Death

Charles Martin died in Abbeville District, South Carolina between June 28, 1808, the date he signed his will, and October 25, 1808, the date it was recorded at the Ordinary's office.(ref name=SAR )^[1]

Will dated June 28, 1808 in Abbeville District. Recorded October 25, 1808. Executors: Wife, Polly Martin, Jacob, George W. Martin. Witnesses: William Drinkard, Samuel Linton, Nathaniel Bolen. Wife, Polly Martin. Children: Jacob, George Washington, William Martin, Suckey Moore, Salley Nichols. Grandchildren: Jas., Thomas Cobb, Patsey Bibb.

The following is a transcription of Charles Martin's will. Charles's gave his wife's name as Patty/Pattey, rather than Patsy, in the document. There is a distinct difference from the Patty/Pattey used for his wife, and the Patsey used for his granddaughter, Patsey Bibb.

Last Will & Testament of Charles Martin Senr Decd Ordinary's Office Recorded in Will book No 1--page (368) the 25 day of October 1808 and Examined P.[?] A. Hamilton O.A.D.

In the name of God amen: I Charles Martin of the District of Abbeville and State of South Carolina, being in perfect Health and Sound Memory Doth make and Ordain this my Last will and Testament in form as followeth To wit

Item 1st- I give to my Son Jacob Martin three Negroes to Wit George Annaky and Sam Boling to him and his Heirs for Ever.

Item 2nd- I Give to my Son George Washington Martin The Plantation whereon I now Live after my Wifes Deceas Containing two Hundred and Eighty Nine acres more of Less Lying in Abbeville formerly belonging to John Lowry. Also Four Negroes to Wit Trim, Little Lewis, Isaac, and Hannah also one Feather Bed and Furniture, also my Senk[?] Slab Tables and Sitting Cheares Also my Waggon and Team with my stock of Hogs and Two Cows and Calves be it Remembered the Negroes above Named is my Son George's property at my Death the Resid'nc as above at my wifes Deceas.

Item 3rd. I Lend to my Daughter Suckey Moore one Negro Girl Named Silvia and after my Daughters Death my Desire is the said Silvia and her Increase be Equally Divided among her Children.

Item 4th. I lend to my Son William Martin three Negroes to wit Ned, Jenny Meekins, and Joe During his Life and if my son william Should marry and have an Heir Lawfully begotten then the above Negroes I give to the Heirs of his Body and if he should Die without Issue I give the above Negroes to my Sons Jacob and Washington Martin to them and their Heirs for Ever.

Item 5th. I give to my Two Grand Sons James and Thomas Cobbs, one Cow and Calf Each

Item 6th. I give to my Grand Daughter Patsey Bibb one mourning Habbet

Item 7th. I Lend to my Beloved Wife Pattey Martin the Land whereon I now Live Containing 289 acres During her Life, and All the Rest of my Negroes that is not Named in this will. I lend to her During her Life also all my household and Kitchen Furniture also All my Cattle Hogs Sheep also my Waggon and Team and her Riding mare and Saddle and all my Working Tools

Item 7th [sic] my Desire is that my Executors here after Named after my wifes Deceas pay to Salley Nichols one Hundred Dollars out of my Estate and after that the whole of my Estate not Bequeathed above be Sold of in Lots and Drawd, for by all my Surviving Children Except Salley Nichols.

Lastly I Constitute and appoint Jacob Martin Geo W. Martin with my Wife Pattey Martin Exrs and Executrix of this my Last will and Testatment

Given and my hand & seal this 28th Day of June 1808 Interlined the word Seal before assignd.
