James was born about 1856, possibly in Belfast, Ireland, the son of William Alexander Martin, Inspector of Schools.
In 1880 he married Susan Isabella Napier in York Street Presbyterian Church, Belfast. He was a clerk living in Belfast and she was also living in Belfast. The witnesses were James H Thompson and Mary Napier.[1]
