Marie Pauline Martin was born at at 15, rue du Pont Neuf Alençon, Orne, France. She was the second child of child of Louis Martin Zélie Guérin Pauline was baptised at St. Pierre de Montsort, Alençon, her maternal uncle Isidore was her Godfather and a family friend, Pauline Romet was her Godmother. In 1868 Pauline became a boarder at the Visitation School at Le Mans with her sister Marie. She was a very good student but left school in 1877, before completing her studies due to her mother's illness and death. She helped her older sister Marie to take care of their younger sisters. Pauline taught most subjects to her youngest sister, Thérèse until she was eight and began school. A year later on October 2, 1882 Pauline entered the Carmel of Lisieux, where she was later joined by three of her sisters. As a girl Pauline had been good at painting and she continued this in Carmel, she also wrote poetry and short plays for the nuns. Pauline was elected prioress for a term in 1893 and again in 1902. She became prioress again in 1909 and by exceptional request from the church authorities, due to the canonisation of her sister St. Thérèse, she remained in that office until her death on July 28, 1951.
