Five Quarters, Journal of St John Historical Society Vlll, issue 5 April 2016: Sarah Martin: From Slavery to Manumission to Freedom on St John. Sarah Elizabeth Martin was born about 1774 to slaves on Susannaberg Plantation, which was owned by Maria Susanna Borm and her husband Rev Johs Knevels. Maria Susanna was the grand daughter of Susanna van Beverhoudt/Runnels, aunt of Johs and Pieter v B. Maria Susanna's sons Johs and Isaac Knevel freed Sarah Elisabeth Martin about 1796. She and her children lived on the plantations Guinea Gut and Sans Souci which were 'sold', according to court documents read in 19?1812, to Sarah Elisabeth Martin's children by their father Pieter vB. Probate records show Pieter was not married, however they identify Sarah Elisabeth Martin as the mother of his 11 children. He left Sarah and each of his children 500 dollars individually and 2000 dollars collectively to build a house for the use of them all.
