The following story comes from Naomi Martin Norman
(letter written to Richard O. Theilig, dated November 23, 2003)
"I've heard this story repeated over and over during my life time.
It seems it was election time and a Mr. McPike approached mygreat-grandfather, Marcenes "Cene" as he was nick-named, trying topersuade him to vote a certain way, or trying to buy his vote. As thestory goes, Cene refused. That evening as Cene was going to the barnto care for the livestock, he had to pass between two cornfields.Doing so, Mr. McPike threw a rock hitting grandpa in the back of thehead. He died that night from a brain concussion.
In those days there were vigilantes called "White Caps" about likeK.K.K. They rode to find Mr. McPike. They searched for days. Whenthey found him he was hiding in a Cedar tree that was growing near mygrandfather's grave. When they found him he confessed. If Iunderstand it right, they hung him right there.
Who did the biggest crime? To me one was as bad as the other. Ithink Mr. McPike threw the rock to scare Cene, not to kill him. Mostlikely this was an accident.
My great-grandfather is buried at Bartletsville in the HawkinsCemetery, but there's no stone."
