Biography

Do not confuse with John Martin (1652-1720) who never lived in Swansea but lived in Rehoboth for about sixty years before he passed away. He married Mercy (Billington) Martin and they had a son named Robert (born in Rehoboth) who was born the same year as that this John's daughter, Joanna (Martin) Short (Born in Swansea).

John Martyn was the son of Edward Martyn and Judith Uppam who married at Bicton on June 14, 1632. Upham Genealogy notes that they had a son named John. [1] John was baptized on 22 Feb. 1634/35 in Ottery-St. Mary, Devonshire, England. [2] [3] [4] [5] John Martin born 1634/35 married Joanna Esten born 1645 on April 26, 1671 in Massachusetts, [6] more specifically in Swansea. [7]

They had nine children.

John Martin was 80 years of age when he passed away on March 21, 1713 in Swansea, Bristol County, Massachusetts. His body lies in Tyler Point Cemetery in Barrington, Rhode Island which "was founded by Congregationalist separatists from Swansea, Massachusetts and incorporated in 1717."[8] Another record shows age of 81 at death making estimated birth at about 1632. Burial was at New-meadow Neck, Barrington, R. I. [9]

Research Notes

Name Variants

John was born Martyn but used Martin after coming to America.[7]
Spouse (est as 1645 (death at age 88) - 1733), Joan/Joanna, has records using Enstance/Esten/Astin and Eustance?/etc?[7]

Immigraton

"A legal record states that John Martin, living in his uncle Upham household testified in the suit of Priscilla Upham versus Paul Nixon, June 15. 1658."[20]
Suggests that he immigrated between 1658 and 1671.

Birth and Baptism

It is clear that John was baptized on 22 Feb. 1634/35, as sourced above.

An alternate date of 16 Feb. sometimes crops up. Lamentably the error is repeated by the FamilySearch entry for John's birth. This is the result from the search link for Tapley-Soper's transcriptions of Ottery-St. Mary parish records,[3] FHL film 962974, but it references a data compendium, "England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975", which evidently draws upon other sources, not stated. The film gives 22 Feb. not 16, based on direct review some years ago (browse of the film on FamilySearch is restricted).

Of several IGI citations for John Martin/Martyn, three give that date; all are user-submitted without source. The Record Office states that no record was found on that date.

Sixteen February would be a possible birth date, but there is no basis for that. Of sources cited above for that date, Findagrave[8] uses it for birth, but annexed is the Record Office report which refutes it; the transcript on NEGHR[9] gives age at death as 81 which suggests birth in 1633/34, if it means as then usual "year of his age", but no specific date; AGBI[10] in turn cites Guild, who gives birth as 1633[21] and Martin who does not give a birth date.[22]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Both father and son John Martin would not have died on the same day on Mar. 21 1713 in two different places.
