Edward Martin was probably from Bicton, Devon, England where he was married or from nearby Ottery St. Mary where his only known child was born. There were many Martin families at Bicton, Ottery St. Mary, Clyst Honiton, and other nearby towns. His exact date of birth, place of birth and parents are not known. He was certainly closely related to the New England immigrants Abraham, Robert and Richard Martin who all originated from Ottery St. Mary. He married Judith Upham, while her sister Joan married Robert Martin.

He married Judith (Upham) Martin in Bicton in 1632. "Their only known son" was John, born in Ottery-St. Mary in 1634. No other children are recorded.[1]

John emigrated to America but Edward and Judith did not.[2]

Marriage

:Married: Judith Upham on 14 June 1632 at Bicton, Devon, England.[3]

Children: of Edward Martin and Judith Upham:
They had only 1 confirmed child.
  1. John Martin. Baptized on 22 Feb 1634 in Ottery St Mary, Devon, England. He married Joanna Esten on 26 April 1671 at Swansea, Massachusetts.

Possible children with Judith Upham

None of the children except John has been substantiated.:

Edward was married on 14 JUN 1632 at Bicton, Devon, , England[4][5][6]

Research Notes

Incorrect parents: Edward Martin is sometimes made to be a brother of the New England immigrants Andrew, Robert and Richard Martin. This is incorrect. There are numerous connections between the two families and they certainly closely related however, Edward is not a brother of Andrew, Robert and Richard or his son john would have been named in their wills.[7]

Children: Any near matches in Ottery-St.M VR?

Is there any evidence that Edward came to America? The only source I can find that addresses it, Nora Emma Snow, Snow-Estes Ancestry (HathiTrust.org), says that he did not. There appears to be no record of him in Swansea or Rehoboth.

Also there seems to be no real sourcing for his parentage, or any of the children, except John. Hodge (AmericanAncestors.org) says he was their only known son.

Parents, children except John and d/p of death should be removed. Refs. can be retained in notes as already suggested.

Profiles for his wives have been set in an unmerged match, but they're completely different people and should not be in any kind of match.

Edward's son John, b 1633, however, has two profiles - one son of Suzan & one son of Judith. Suzan's profile has her b 1580 & d 1606, which rules her out as father of John b. 1633 & makes it very unlikely that she was married to Edward b 1600.

Does anyone have a source for his marriage to Suzan?
