Biography

Mary was born about 1627. She was the daughter of Nicolas Martiau and Jane Unknown. She passed away before 1657.

We find very little reference to Mary (Martiau) Scarsbrook in the records of colonial Virginia and what we do find all, generally, are extracted from her father's will, which is a powerful testimony of a fathers love for his daughters.[1]

We can place her birth date around 1625 due to her father's, Nicholas Martiau, letter to Henry Hastings, 5th Earl of Huntingdon (24 April 1586 – 14 November 1643) in which Nicholas apologizes for not appearing personally, in England, but informs Lord Henry that "...I am now both a husband and a father and so constrained to stay a while longer by it, until my little ones can rise and follow me."[2]. Their close friendship is evidenced when Nicholas adds, "My wife also, though yet unknown to your Honor, is bold yet to present unto your noble Lady, a small token of Tobacco, which we wish will be graciously accepted of you...."[2] The Noble Lady referred to was Lady Elizabeth Stanley (1588–1633) His wife was a great-great-granddaughter of Mary Tudor, Duchess of Suffolk. She, at one time, was third-in-line to succeed to the throne of England.

Mary Martiau Scarsbrook's mother Jane Berkely died before 1645, but it is unlikely she died in 1625, as stated on her profile, considering she was in court in 1627...."[2]

"In 1645 Nicholas Martian married Isabella Beach as shown by the records of York. His will was dated March 1, 1657 or '67. and was proved April 4, 1657. He named his oldest daughter Elizabeth, who had crossed the ocean with him and became the wife of George Reade. Mary, his second daughter, wife of John Scarbrook, of York Co. Sarah, his third daughter, wife of Capt. William Fuller, the Puritan Governor of Maryland."[3]

Be forewarned when using Louise Pecquet du Bellet and Martha Jaquelin's "Prominent Families of Virginia" that they have been proven an unreliable source. A good story and "connecting the lines" overrules accuracy.

Col. John Scarbrook and Mary had two daughters at least, Jane DUKE and Elizabeth CONDON [4]

Martha Scarsbrook was not the daughter of Mary Martiau, but the daughter of John Scarsbrook's second wife, Elizabeth Cary.

sources? also, I think you might have the wrong John/Jonathan? See John Scarsbrook (abt.1676-) - the profile is attached as son of this Jonathan and husband of Elizabeth (Cary) Scarsbrook (1678-). Text for his profile includes this from his will, proved 24 Jun 1679: "... four minor children, Martha, Mary, Hannah and John Scarsbrook."

I am a direct descendent of Nicholas Martiau & have uploaded my Ancestry DNA test. I just realized I live & grew up right here at Yorktown, spent 40 yrs walking & driving by his grave & never knew !

I'm also very new & clumsy to Wikitree; can anyone help me add/connect the line to my profile ?

Line is - Nicholas Martiau / daugh Mary Martiau Scarsbrook / daugh Jane Scarsbrook Duke Montfort / son Joseph Montfort / daugh Sarah Montford Stokes / son David Stokes / daugh (Sarah) Anne Stokes Wade / daugh Sarah Anne Wade Wade Baird / son Robert Baird / son Robert Bedford Baird-son Joseph Wiley Baird / daugh Anna Lois Baird Jones / son Bobbie Keith Jones- daughter Me :)

I appreciate any help at all thank you !

Hi & Welcome to WikiTree! WikiTree has a fairly steep learning curve - at least, I found it to be so. However, the more you play, the easier it gets. I always advise new folks to begin building their family tree to the ancestor they're hoping to connect to. By the time you've created the three or four (or more) profiles needed to connect to existing profiles, you'll be getting the hang of WikiTree.

I looked at the line you posted & you're going to hit a snag with David Stokes and "daugh (Sarah) Anne Stokes Wade" - they're currently siblings, not father/daughter. When you get there, you'll want to add sources to figure out what's correct.

The existing trail from Nicholas ends with Sarah (Wade) Baird, so you'll need to create profiles from you to her (i.e., your father, grandmother, etc.). See https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=Wade-4760&person2_name=Martiau-2 for the trail of existing profiles between Nicholas and Sarah.

Cheers, Liz

Thank you so so so much ! I have a lot of factual sources as well as DNA for myself & my father. I'm playing around trying to figure out how to connect those & break through the James Baird block, who married Sarah Ann Wade as well as the Tipton Doc Jones block. Can't find anything before them & very minimal on them them selves.

Appreciate you very much !

I added US Southern Colonies Project as a manager (to support the project box being displayed).

I know this is very, very late but THANK YOU!!!!!

I've done an immense amount of work & I've been shocked at the amount of large historical figures in my direct line & extended family. It reads like a world & building of America history book! I do have the documentation necessary to connect all the way from Nicholas Martiau to Sara Wade Baird & from her cleanly to me. I'm lucky to actually live in VA & grew up 20 minutes from the Yorktown Battlefields. Being here has given me an advantage on knowing the references ( connecting them to the present. As George Washington & I are 1st cousins, it will be exciting to hopefully connect my DNA to him.

Again, I wanted to correct my rudeness at not thanking you earlier.

Many Blessings !!

You're welcome! And I didn't think you were rude at all. Enjoy your research!

Cheers, Liz
