Biography

Leslie was born Jun 30 1887 in Russell, Pine Grove, Warren, Pennsylvania.[1]He was the son of John Martindale and Orpha Matson[2]

In 1905 census, Leslie was 17, with his parents, John age 45 and Orpha age 49, and brother Merle, age 15, in Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York. [3]

Leslie married Ina Carlson on 28 December 1907 in Jamestown, Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York, United States.[4] Ina was born in New York. [5]

In 1910 census, Leslie was 22, with his wife Ina E, age 22, in Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York. [5]

In 1915 census, Leslie was 27, with his mother Orphy, age 59, and sister Ana, age 28, with a child Duglass, age 4, but not sure whose son he is, in Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York. [6]

In Jun 1917, Leslie registered for World War I Draft, indicating that he was single and working as a weaver for Jamestown Worsted Mlls in Jamestown, New York.[7]

Leslie enlisted Nov 23 1917 and was discharged May 29 1919. He served as Private with his address listed as Casper, Wyoming. [8]

In 1920 census, there are 2 census

  • Leslie was 32, single, with his mother Orphy, age 63, and brother Merle, age 30, in Chautauqua, New York. [9] Census dated Jan 21 1920.
  • Leslie was 32, married, indicated as a Boarder in Gunnison, Colorado. Above Leslie in the image is Gertrude Wheeler, (daughter of Blanche from her 1st marriage to Alton Wheeler?), Blanche Treadway, his future wife listed in marriage, Lydia Silsby (Blanche's mother), and Margaret Mills (Blanche sister) and her husband Arthur Mills. [10] Census dated Jan 25 1920.

Leslie married Blanche Treadway on 19 October 1920 in Denver, Gunnison, Colorado, United States.[11] Blanche Find A Grave: Memorial #67029022 lists marriage to Alton Wheeler in 1902, marriage to Leslie Martindale in 1920, marriage to Clyde Helm in 1938. She was born Apr 2 1885 in New York and died Feb 11 1950 in Colorado, with burial in Colorado with Clyde.[12]

In 1930 census, Leslie was 43, with his wife Blanche, age 44, and son Darwin, age 8, in Denver, Colorado. [13]

Leslie died on 21 February 1940 in Proviso, Cook, Illinois, United States. His residence is given as Casper, Natrona, Wyoming, burial will be in Wyoming. [14] He was the son of John Martindale and Orpha Matson[2]

He is buried in Highland Cemetery, Casper, Natrona County, Wyoming[15]

Research Notes

Death sources for Leslie mention wife as Ina, his 1st wife, instead of 2nd wife, Blanche, who he must have divorced since she remarried in 1938.
