John Martindale was born in England August 14, 1676. He arrived in America in 1686 and settled in Newton, Bucks County, Pa. John married Mary Bridgeman, daughter of Walter and Blanche (Constable) Bridgeman, in 1705. Walter and Blanche had come from Cornwall, England on the same ship in 1684, but were not married until 1686. Blanche came in the company of her brother Thomas Constable. Mary Bridgman was born 1687.
John Martindale was a cordwainer (shoemaker) and the family lived in Philadelphia. Mary inherited land in Bucks county originally entered by her father. John and Mary were members of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Mary Bridgman's bible, presented in her 18th year, is in the library of the Bucks County Historical Society and contains some records of her children.
John and Mary Martindale had three daughters and three sons one of them named William. This William also had a son named William, who was born March 8, 1753, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and was a Revolutionary War soldier.
The Martindale family moved to Union County, South Carolina and there, in 1771, the young William married Martha Bishop, daughter of Thomas and Mary Bishop. William and Martha Bishop Martindale had three sons, John, Moses and James, and six daughers, Sarah, Polly, Nancy, Rachel, Martha (Patsy), and Ruth.
Mary Martindale died 7 Dec. 1726. and John Martindell died. 5 Oct. 1750.
