Biography

This man keeps getting named as William Heinrich Mertz. There is simply no evidence at all he had that middle name. In every record he was William.

He also is often said to have been the son of Johan Wilhelm Mertz (1739-1803) who died in Somerset County, PA but I simply don't think that is true..

We cannot totally document who his father was but the evidence in my opinion is incredibly strong it was John Philip Mertz (brother of Wilhelm) and his wife Catharina.

William passed away in 1854, and was buried at Briar Creek Union Cemetery, Briar Creek, Columbia County, Pennsylvania.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Mertz-403 and Martz-465 appear to represent the same person because: William Martz who died in 1854 in Columbia County was NOT the son of Wilhelm Martz who died in 1803 in Somerset County. Wilhelm was his uncle, maybe even namesake. Columbia County William was the son of Wilhelm's brother John Philip. See my profile:
