Biography

Essie was born in 1905. She is the daughter of Alton Mason and Edna Richards. ^[1]

Residence:

1910 – Kentucky, Hancock, Patesville, District 60, 2 May 1910 Family number 150 in the census is the Davis Mason family. Davis A. (33) and wife Edna (30) along with children Noal (11), Essie (5), Ola (2) and Elmer (9 mos.) are living on the farm they own on Roseville near Friendship Road. Davis is a farmer and the couple has been married 14 years and reports that 4 of their 6 children are still living. Everyone reports they and their parents were born in Kentucky.

1920 – Kentucky, Hancock County, Patesville, District 61, 26 Jan 1920 Alton (43) is now listed as a widow. Living with him are his children Essie (14), Ola (12), Zelma (10) and Nora C. (7). The farm is owned and Alton is a general farmer. The farm is located on the Cloverport-Fordsville Road.

1930 – Indiana, Lake County, Hammond, District 135, 28 Apr 1930 Sheet 28B shows Earl Cheek (28), wife Essie (25) and children Darold (4) and Caroline (2) living in the home they rent for $60 at 1296 Myrtle. They report they were 20 and 18 when married. Earl and Essie report they and their parents were born in Kentucky while their children were born in Indiana. Earl reports to be an independent linoleum layer.

1940 – Indiana, Lake County, Hammond, District 45-92, 21 Apr 1940 Sheet 6A shows Earl Cheek (38), wife Essie (35) and children Darrell E. (14), Carolyn (12) and Phyllis (8) living in the home they own valued at $4,200 located at 43 Carroll Street. They report they were living in the same house in 1935. Earl is a watchman at an oil refinery and earned $1,600 the previous year.

1945 – Indiana, Lake County, Hammond The City Directory of 1945 for Hammond, Indiana shows Earl and wife Essie living at 43 Carroll. Earl is a watchman.
