Biography

Birth

John Mason was the son of Daniel Mason and Experience (Newcomb) Mason. He was born in Newton on December 23, 1725.[1]

Marriage

John married Elizabeth Dunton (1727-1822), daughter of Thomas Dunton of Warren, Massachusetts. Presumably occurred prior to the birth of their first child in Barre in 1751, but no record of the wedding found in Vital Records of Barre, Newton, or Warren.

Children

john and Elizabeth had, in Barre:[2]

  • Sarah, September 30, 1751, married Jonas Leonard, Feb. 22, 1770
  • Daniel, b. April 6, 1753, married Tabitha Jenkins, May 10, 1781
  • Jonas "Maison", b. April 15, 1755, died September 1 of that year, aged 4 months
  • Experience, b. July 12, 1756 (Note: the record reads "d. John and _____", but there was no other John Mason in Barre at that time, mother must have been Elizabeth.), married Timothy Nurse Jr., August 17, 1780
  • Abigail, b. Sept. 9, 1758, married Moses Mandell of Hardwick, January 2, 1783
  • Hannah, b. February 15, 1763, married David Holden, February 20, 1791
  • John, b. June 24, 1765, married Mercy Stearns of Shrewsbury, October 19, 1786
  • Thaddeus, b. June 12, 1767, married Hannah Allen, October 4, 1790
  • Newhall, b. April 11, 1769
  • Lot, b. October 9, 1770, married Hannah Bangs, August 16, 1792

Life in Barre

John settled at Barre, about 1750, was a member of the Provincial Congress, 1774-1775, representative to the Genral Court, 1776, 1777, 1780, 1781, selectman, 1775, 1776, 1777, 1779, town assessor, 1779, delegate to the Covention, Cambridge Mass., September 1779, moderator fourteen times, and many years Deacon of the church.

Death

Deacon John Mason died in Barre on May 1, 1784, in his 58th year.[3]
