Newspaper Clipping

Hardin County Independent, Oct. 13, 1983 [11]
"Thinking that possibly your readers would be interested in learning something of the early history of Hardin County, I submit the following.
My father, Caswell Mason, was born in North Carolina about 1795 and moved to Caldwell Co., Ky., when a boy, at which place the writer was born Feb. 1st., 1842. Father moved to Illinois in 1849; to Fayette County in 1853 where he had a brother, Mark Mason, who raised quite a large family. Among his sons I remember only Ab and Henry Mason.
Father moved back to Hardin County in 1854, we making the trip both ways in the old "prairie schooner", the ox wagon, and our oxen never got scared at an automobile on the way. At that time there was only one railroad in the great State of Illinois, the Illinois Central, which we crossed at DuQuoin, IL. Wife and I are just back from a visit to father's old home place in Fayette County after an absence of 64 years. We found that uncle Mark and all of his children had passed to the great beyond, but we found quite a number of our second cousins who seemed to be happily surprised at their newly found kinsfolk. We stayed overnight with a young German, Andrew Brackenbusch, who now owns the old homestead and were granted every courtesy possible under the circumstances. They were right in the midst of the oats and wheat threshing and had plenty to do. Wheat was making from 25 to 30 bushels per acre and selling at $2.00 per bushel; oats 50 to 80 bushels per acre and selling at 62 and 63 cents per bushel.
Hardin County had the best corn crop that we saw except in Gallatin and Sangamon Counties. Corn up through the State is very poor compared with what one sees in "Joseph's Egypt". We left Fayette County Monday for Springfield to attend the State Fair, which was seemingly a success, notwithstanding the great street car strike that was in progress at that time. We used the cars of the city daily but were advised to keep off them at nights, which we did. I attended the G.A.R. Reunion in which 250 or 300 marched out before Governor Lowden who made a fine speech in which he praised the old soldiers for what they did for the nation in the period from 1861 to 1865. Encouraging words were given to our young soldiers who are now entering the great war by the Governor. He emphasized the fact that the present world war was a show down and that we MUST WIN. At the close of his address he was given three cheers by the old soldiers and a hearty handshake which he seemed highly proud of. He urged everyone to stand behind the President and uphold the American Flag which has never been defeated or lowered to any nation, and I don't believe it ever will.
I am the 15th child of my parents who had born to them ten boys and six girls, all of whom save myself and one sister, Mrs. Sarah Oldham, have passed to the Great Beyond. Mrs. Oldham is in the 80's."
