Biography

Edward was born in 1816 and died in 1882 aged 66 years. He lived in Lancashire, was a Silk Spinner and married Magdalena Agnes with whom he had seven children. He built Shefferlands in 1857/8, an austere but large and attractive house with six bedrooms and spacious grounds.

But in the London Gazette of December 7th 1877 the following notice appeared. The Bankruptcy Act 1869. In the County Court of Lancashire Holden and Preston in the matter of Proceedings for Liquidation by Arrangement or Composition with Creditors instituted by Edward Mason of Shefferlands and Thomas Mason of Carus Lodge Halton aforesaid Notice is hereby given that a first General Meeting of the Creditors has been summoned ..... on the 21st day of December 1877 at half past two o'clock precisely. Dated this 5th day of December 1877.

Oh! dear that can't have been a Very Happy Christmas!

Edward died five years later aged only 66 years, but the family connection to Lancashire remained firm.
