Biography

Thomas Massey (Massie) may have been born before 1580 because he was listed in the Visitation of Cheshire in that year,[1] [2] Another source indicates he was born about or before 1589 at Cheshire, England.[3] [4] It should be kept in mind that original records though considered the "best available" sources may contain errors in recording or transcription. The record may also refer to another person of the same or similar name who was living in the same area. A best effort has been made to use sources that are as accurate as possible.

Thomas Massey was the son and heir of Hugh Massey, of Larton iuxta Broxton, d1639 and Anne, daughter and heir of Randall Dodde of Edge.[5] [6]

"The Visitation of Cheshire taken in 1613" records that Thomas Massey was at that time married to Judith Brereton, daughter of Randall Brereton, of Kindington (Cuddington),[5] so she was not born about 1612 as stated in some sources.[7] Cheshire parish records indicate that Judith Berereton was born about 1581 [8]

Thomas Massey died in Malpas, Cheshire, England prior to May 1, 1643 [9]

Children of Thomas Massey

Judith and Thomas are said to have had at least two sons: Hugh Massey, who died without issue and was buried at Malpas in 1678 [10]; and Francis Massey who married and had children: Hugh, Anne (bapt. 1669), Mary (bapt. 1670) and Frances (bapt. 1672) [11]

Thomas and Judith are also said by Massey family historians to have had two other sons: Alexander Massey b. 1637 and Peter Massey b. 1639/40 d. December 25, 1719. [12] Proof has not been found to support Alexander and Peter's relationship as children of Thomas and Judith Massey. Their relationship to Thomas and Judith Brereton Massey as children is doubtful as both Thomas and Judith would have been elderly and Judith beyond child bearing years. Although a late birth is possible it is unlikely and in the 17th century the chance of infant mortality would be great given Judith's age.

Existing Cheshire records do provide some evidence of several children for Thomas and Judith Massey. Some were previously undocumented:

  • Thomas Massie, christened Nov 20, 1622 [13] Note that Thomas was christened at Malpas, and his and his father's surname was spelled Massie, not Massey. Thomas Massie is listed as father.
  • Margaret Massey, christened May 13, 1620, Malpas, Cheshire [14] [15] [16]Thomas and Judith Massye/Massey are listed as parents. Note the Massye spelling. Y was often used in place of an i.
  • Judyth Massey, christened July 14, 1615[17] Thomas Massye is named as father. Note the Massye spelling. Y was often used in place of an i.
  • George Massey, christened Feb 17, 1617 [18] [19] [20] It should be noted that Peter Massie named a son George. His existence is supported by St Peter's Parish Church records. Thomas and Judith Massye/Massey are named as parents. Note the Massye spelling. Y was often used in place of an i.
  • Peter Massie, christened Aug 19, 1608. Obviously, given the birth date this may not be the Peter Massie of this profile. Additionally, this Peter Massie was christened at Chester, not Malpas, or Coddington [21] This Peter Massie b 1608 may not be a son of Thomas and Judith Massey.
Peter Massie 1640-1719 has been proven not to be a son of Thomas and Judith Brereton Massey [22] No evidence for a son named Alexander has been found.

I removed the DOB for Hugh Massey, father of THomas, to clear the date conflict. The birth date of Hugh Massey was estimated (no source given). More research is needed. Thomas Massey, son of Hugh is listed iin the 1580 Visitation of Cheshire indicating a birth bef that date. Exact date unknown, and there are conflicting sources.
