Elizabeth Ellis
Elizabeth Ellis was born about 1788 in Lincoln County, Tennessee. She married Joshua Massey in Jefferson County, Tennessee on February 20, 1808.
They had some thirteen children. I only know of these:
HESTER MASSEY born March 2, 1809.
THOMAS MASSEY
HARLEY MASSEY
Elizabeth Ellis and Joshua Massey were married in Jefferson County on Feb 20, 1808. Their third child, Lewis, was born in 1811, I believe in Jefferson County, and their fourth, Hardy, was born in Lincoln County in 1815. (see note below about name) (Catherine: do you have any supporting data on these dates? Was there another child between Lewis and Hardy?)
About the name of "Hardy"...
John and Hulda Neece's land in Lincoln County was adjacient to Hardy Holman, who was a church pastor and community leader, based on the frequency with which his name shows up on official records as witness and overseer. John Neece bought land from his, and at one point they simply swapped about 500 acres. Hulda's sister, Elizabeth Curry and husband James Curry, must also have been close to the Holmans, because they both had children in 1815 that they named Hardy. Hardy Holeman Neece and Hardy Curry. (Catherine: Do you know Hardy Curry's middle name?)
There is a large line of Massey families in Green County, Missouri, especially Springfield. I have had contact with their genealogist and we found no connections to Elizabeth.[60]

CONT CONT The 1880 Federal Census, Hickory County Missouri - Elizabeth's parents are listed as born in Tennessee. During the time Elizabeth Massey was in Missouri there is also mention of Benjamin and Nathaniel Massey. Are these relatives of Elizabeth? CONT CONT Elsie Cowen told me she remembered seeing Elizabeth's spinning wheel and pipe at Elsie's aunt's home. (Yes, some women smoked pipes in those days! I have seen mention of that both in Kentucky and in the Ozarks.)

While I don't have any documentation yet, I believe it's possible that Joshua could be a brother to James Massey b. 1786 who married Mary Crowley and resided in Knox Co., TN.
