My ancestral background is a hearty European stew with a bit of everything tossed in the pot, including some mystery meat. I am primarily focused on filling out the lesser researched and short branches of my tree, and connecting my DNA relatives to our MCRAs.

Visiting former Massey lands at Scotch Rock, Slievenaboley, County Down in 2018.

Ancestry

Linda Massey is a descendant of Mayflower Passenger Thomas Rogers.
Linda Massey has Irish ancestors.
Linda Massey has Italian Roots.

My direct paternal line is from Northern Ireland, haplogroup R-L21/R-CTS241. My direct maternal line is from the area of Messina, Sicily, haplogroup K1a-C150T. I am on 23andMe, FTDNA, Ancestry.com, MyHeritage, GedMatch, and LivingDNA.

Paternal Grandfather My paternal grandfather's family can be broken down into 3 distinct branches.

  • County Down & Northern Ireland - includes the families connected to Massey and McBurney in and around Drumgooland Parish, County Down. These families came to Boston, Massachusetts in the mid-late 1800s.
  • Scotland & Pictou County Nova Scotia, Canada - includes the Fraser and Ross families of McLellan's Brook/Mountain. Some of the Frasers settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the late 1800s.
  • English Colonials to Barnstable County, Massachusetts - Lewis, Adams, Fish, Nye & many others who settled on Cape Cod. Mayflower descendant of Thomas Rogers. This branch remained in Barnstable until about 1900 when they migrated north to the city.

Paternal Grandmother My paternal grandmother's family came from Kaunas and Vilnius, Lithuania in the 1900s and settled in Cambridge, Massachusetts. They also had connections to Poland and Russia. Names are Karpowicz/Carpowich (Karpavicius) and Rasikiewicz. The mangling of names makes them a challenge to trace in the US.

Maternal Grandfather My maternal grandfather's family has origins primarily in Chester and Delaware Counties, Pennsylvania. They can be broken down into the following groups:

  • McBride/Baker branch going back to colonial era Pennsylvania. My great-grandfather took the family to Southern California in the early 1900s for a career in the Navy.
  • Hinman and allied families of Connecticut.
  • Gifford, Hatch, and other Quaker families who came out of Barnstable, Massachusetts. My parents share multiple sets of common ancestors on this line, names Cobb, Derby, Doggett, Hatch, Lewis, Lombard, and Rowley.
  • Tholan from Leer, Germany immigrating to Chester, Pennsylvania in the mid-1800s.

Maternal Grandmother My maternal grandmother was born in Calabria, Italy. Her mother's family was from Messina, Sicily, and much of the extended family came to the US in the early 1900s. Her father's family was from Bovalino, Calabria. Two of my great-grandfather's siblings are known to have immigrated to Boston, Massachusetts. The fate of the rest of them is still unknown, but it is said the remaining family in Bovalino was wiped out in the 1908 tsunami. Recent names are Anastasi, Gangemi (Sicily) and Pulitano, Blefari (Calabria).

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Linda or other carriers of her ancestors' mitochondrial DNA. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line:
  • Linda Massey: Family Tree DNA mtDNA Test Full Sequence, haplogroup K1, FTDNA kit #B3090, MitoYDNA ID T11068 [compare]
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Linda:

We've put together a survey for you to fill out to check in with you, it will only take a moment as there are only a few questions. Filling out the survey lets us know you are still interested in coordinating your study and provides an opportunity for you to share any suggestions you may have for the project.

If you have decided to step away from your study, please reply to this comment to that effect.

Hi Linda,

It’s time for our annual Ireland Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Jen Hutton, on behalf of the Ireland Project

Hi Linda,

The Ireland Project (previously the Irish Roots Project) has now changed its structure into Teams. We require everyone with the Ireland Badge to be a member of at least one Team or Sub-Team and our google group. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Ireland for details. The Teams are :-

1. Categories Team
2. Counties Team
3. Managed Profiles Team
4. Membership Team

6. Topics Team
7. Diaspora

? Can you let me know if you’d like to stay on in the new project and which team(s) you’d like to join. Please also let me know your e-mail address so that I can get you added to the project’s Google Group or confirm you are already a member of the google group.

Many thanks,

Hello Linda,

Would you like to be seen on WikiTree as one of the "go-to" people for your Mayflower ancestor, Thomas Rogers? The Mayflower Project would like to involve you in a new effort to update Mayflower profiles and establish Mayflower passenger "Teams", beginning with the Rogers family.

Goal: Every project profile will have an accurate, written biography, with inline citations, using primary sources and reliable secondary sources.

I hope that you will be eager to contribute towards this goal starting with the family of your ancestor, Thomas Rogers. Please send me a private message and let me know your thoughts? Once I know you are interested in helping, I will send you an invitation to join the Mayflower Google group. When you accept the invitation, we will be on our way.

Mayflower Project Member.

I see your profile doesn’t include a mayflower G2G Tag. See “Followed Tags” above. You should have the tag - mayflower -so you can follow pertinent Mayflower activities on G2G. When you add the tag, please include the names of passengers in whom you are interested. Thank you

Anne B. Leader Mayflower Project.

Hi, Linda,

I have left you a couple of trusted list requests ( Nelson Slayton & Annette Pulitano) and posted private messages to you about them but have seen no response. I presume you have either changed your e-mail, or your spam blocker is eating them. These are my late wife's parents, and I would like to flesh out their biographies and add some photos. Your prompt attention would be appreciated. Rob Graham.

Glad your on board with the team. I sent you a private message yesterday about registration. I've had some email issues lately. If you didn't receive it, let me know and I'll resend it.

Registration for 2018 Spring Clean-A-Thon is now opened. Will you be joining Anywherers this year]?

Linda,

Keep "Anywherers" Going:

I like the idea of having a stress free environment to help make WikiTree better. So I started a free-space page:

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Space:Anywherers&junk=1&action=edit

i wanted your opinion before posting in G2G.

If you are interested ask to be put on the trusted list for the Anywherers page!

Linda,

Abby Glann posted a G2G discussion about keeping Source-a-Thon and Clean-a-Thon teams active year round. Check it out and let me know if you are interested. If the team is interested then I will start a free-space page for us. Pat
