Mabel was born Johanna Elizabeth[1]. It is unknown the reason why she was called Mabel, except that she had been called such starting in childhood as noted on the 1900 census[2]. It may have been she was called Mabel in honor of her older sister, Jessie Mabel, who died of scarlet fever before Mabel's second birthday[3].
