Biography

Hamon Massey was born in 1290[1] in Tatton, Cheshire, England.

Hamon was the second son of Robert Massey of Tatton co Chester,[2] the son of Sir William Massey of Tatton, knight.[3] His paternal grandmother was Margery Mainwaring, Lady of Rosthorne, probably the daughter of Robert de Manwaring and the sister and heir of Hugh Manwaring lord of Rosthorn.[3]

Hamon had siblings:[3]

  1. Sir William Massy of Tatton, knight, their father's heir, married Margery daughter of Thomas Legh of High Legh de West Hall about 1307;
  2. Adam Massy, in 1327 their father granted him custody of the property of Raufe son of William Mobberley in Norshagh in Tatton, until Rauge reached his majority; and
  3. Robert living 15 Edward III.

His father, Robert died about 1328.[3] Hamon was appointed escheator of Cheshire in 1332.[3] [2]

In 1330, at Mere on the Saturday the feast of St Michael the Archangel, Hamon le Mascy de Tatton granted to Gilbert de Leghe chaplain all his goods moveable and immoveable and land in the town of Mere.[4]

Hamon married Katharine or Margaret, the daughter and heir of Alan de Rixton, co Lanc[2] in 1332.[3] Also in 1332, Alan de Rixton settled his manors and lands on his daughters Katherine, Sibyl, Elizabeth, Emma, Maud, Margaret, and Agnes, and their heirs male, succeeding in turn.[5] The marriage covenant is dated 18 Jan. 1332–3; Hamlet was to pay £40 and Alan was to grant the moiety of the manor of Glazebrook to his daughter and her husband, receiving it back as their tenant at a rent of four marks a year. The seal bears a shield having a bend charged with three cups, and the legend SIG' ALANI DE RIXTVN. Hamlet and Katherine were probably married the same day, the grant of the moiety of the manor speaking of them as man and wife. The lease to Alan de Rixton was made about a month later; Alan de Rixton had previously granted the same moiety of Glazebrook to his son Alan in view of his marriage with Elizabeth, apparently a Radcliffe, but the younger Alan having died, an agreement was made in May, 1333, with John son of Richard de Radcliffe to secure Hamlet and Katherine from interference.[5] Hamon and Katherine had children:[2]

  1. Sir Richard Mascy, knight, born 1348, heir, married Maude, widow of William Horton of Horton, esq.

In 1343, he became Hamon Mascy of Rixton.[2] He was knighted before 21 Edward III 1347.[3] [2]

Sir Hamon Mascy of Rixton died before 1360, as in that year his widow Katherine is named in a document.[5] His son Sir Richard succeeded him as the Massy of Rixton.[3] [5]

Massie-592 and Massey-1983 do not represent the same person because: These to might have been born in the same area but they were born in different years to different families,,their not a match.

Massie-592 and Massey-1983 appear to represent the same person because: Although last names are spelled slightly different , I believe they are one and the same person. Both are of Rixton, Lancaster, both were married to a Katherine. Time frames are about the same
