Biography

Hugh Massy was born after 1307 [Est: Hugh's parents married circa 1307[1]].

Hugh Massy was the son and heir of sir William Massy of Tatton, knight, and his wife, Margery, the daughter of Thomas Legh of High Legh de West Hall.[1]

Hugh was the brother of:

  1. Oliver de Mascy[2] [3]/Massy of Denfeld in Rosthorn, from whom the Massies of Denfield descend;[1]
  2. Richard Massy de Mascy[2] [4] of Dich-house in Rosthorn;[1] and
  3. Ellen, who was married to Gilbert Hassall of Hassall co Lanc, and 2) sir William Brereton of Brereton in Cheshire.[1]

Hugh married Alice.[1]

Hugh and Alice had children:

  1. Richard, died on 3 September, 1370, predeceasing his father, married in 1342, to Alice, the daughter of Gilbert de Haydok in co Lanc;[1]
  2. Sir John Massy of Tatton, knight, second son, heir to his father, died on 22 July 1403 [the day following the Battle of Shrewsbury], married about 1372, Alice, the sister and heir of sir Geffrey Worseley of Worseley in Lanc,[1]

On 1 May 1337, Mabilla, the widow of Hugh's grandfather, Robert, and his father's mother or step-mother, gave William's son [and Hugh's brother], Richard, a messuage and land in Rostherne, and a piece of land called le Park, and this deed was witnessed by John del Legh kt, Thomas Daniers, Thomas de Legh, Adam de Tabbelegh, and Hugh de Kerdyf.[4] The same people witnessed another deed that same day, when Mabillia gave le Denfield in Rostherne, and other land lying between le Denfield and le Linestrete, to William's son [and Hugh's brother], Oliver.[3]

Hugh's father, Sir William, died on 2 Mary 1338,[1] and Hugh succeeded to the family's estates.

At Knottesford on Friday after the feast of St Cedde in 33 Edward III [March, 1359], Robert de Mascy of Knottesford, Hugh de Mascy of Tatton, Richard his brother and Oliver de Mascy entered into a bond of 19 marcs silver to Richard del Halle de Legh and William his son.[2]

Hugh Massy died circa 45 Edward III [1371], and before 1375.[1]
