Mary Massey, daughter of James Massey and Ann Lewis, was born on 12 June 1734 in Marple township, Chester county, Pennsylvania. [1]
Mary Massey and Andrew Steel publcally declared their intention to marry on 20 March 1758 at Chester, Pennsylvania. [2]
Note on the Calender in use at that time
In the original source, the dates of birth for Mary Massey and siblings are given in the Old Style, according to which the Calender year began on 25 March; so that the first month of the year was March, not January. Mary is recorded as being born on the Twelfth Day of the Fourth Month (June, not April) in the year 1734, i.e., 12 June 1734.
The calender change in England and Ireland took place on the day the act came into force, i.e. 2nd of September 1752, with the change to the new calendar the following day, making it the 14th of September (New Style) rather than the 2nd (Old Style). It was only the following year 1st of January 1753 that year began on the 1st of January, rather than in March. Scotland made the change in 1600.
