Biography

While many genealogies accept his marriage to Frances Norgraves, one researcher has raised serious doubts. More later.

William was born about 1666. He passed away about 1705. [1]

William Wentworth inherited Hope Plantation from his father, along with at least 100 acres in Charles Co., Maryland along the Matawoman Creek. On March 11 1701 he bought 100 acres on the south side of the Acquia River, above Hope Plantation, from Thomas Norman. In his will, dated Nov. 12, 1705 and recorded Dec. 12, 1705 he indicates his three sons are all under the age of majority, and leaves Hope Plantation to his eldest son, Daniel; livestock to his second and third sons, John & James; livestock to his daughter, Mary; the 100 acres he bought from Norman to his wife's son, William Mason; and the rest to his wife, Frances, including the land in Maryland. There was some court action taken 1690-1691 against William and his mother, Sarah Wentworth Matheny, charging them with taking over the 200 acres owned by Solomon Day.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

Ed Powell's research settled the issue of Wm's wife Frances. Her maiden name is unknown, as is the name of her first husband Mason. Please let's not perpetuate an error. Also, Wm B. should be detatched from this pair, as they had no son Wm.

See Note on Frances Mason Matheny profile;

On December 5, 2013 at 20:22GMT Linda Ellinger, States that France Norgraves is not wife of William Matheny. I cannot get in the website stated there to verify.

Matheny-468 and Matheny-56 appear to represent the same person because: I agree with Christine that these should be merged. If this is rejected again, PLEASE document the reasons for the rejection. THank you.

Matheny 468 should be merged into this profile. Why was this merge rejected?

Hello, Maria--would you check your pending merges, please? Thanks much!

Based on dates and parents, I think that Metheny-50, Mathenia-4, and Matheny 56 are all the same person though the first two of them are, oddly, posted as brothers. How to proceed? Who should be merged into whom and how to handle the variation in last names?

There is a very compelling and carefully researched piece on genealogy.com that calls into question the attribution of Frances Norgraves (Mason) as Spouse of William Wentworth Matheny. See
