Matheny/Metteneye Lineage

Biography

Daniel Matheny is the descendant of a Huguenot emigrant.

The Matheny family immigrated to the American colonies from England and subsequently spread out over many states. The first immigrant to the American colonies was Daniel Mathenia I, ca 1638-1685. In so far as known all the colonial Mathenys are descended from Daniel & his wife Sarah.

Born at Bossenden Farm on the Faversham Road near Canterbury,County Kent. Son of William Matheny, the great-grandson of a Huguenot refugee from Flanders.

Many of his ancestors were French noblemen of the chevalier (knight) class.

Immigrated to the Virginia Colony sometime around the mid-1600s with his brother Michael. It is believed they first set foot in the new world at or near Jamestown, Virginia. Michael has no known descendants.

Daniel went to Charles Co., Maryland where he acquired "Portowne, Wentworth-Woodhouse", "Fernes", "Mathena'a Folly", "Cowland" plantations. That was where he first started to farm tobacco. [1]

Although there is a theory that his wife Sarah was a daughter of neighbor Thomas Wentworth, there is no proof of this, nor that Thomas Wentworth was a married man with a family.

BIOGRAPHY: 1672-1679 ARCHIVE OF MARYLAND, Vol. LX p.445: Jan 1672/73-Daniel registered earmark for his daughter Sarah (cattle); Liber F. #1, folio 203; Daniel entered earmark of Hoggs (sic) for daughter Mary, court held 1674; Libre H, #1; court held 9 Mar 1679--Daniel entered earmark of hogs for daughter Sarah, who, now being dead, left her stock to sister Elizabeth.

In 1681, he and several Protestant farmers got into trouble along with Lt.Gov. Josiah Fendall of Maryland and became embroiled in an early Protestant uprising against Lord Baltimore's Catholic dominated government in Maryland Daniel was arrested, and seems to have been given the choice to leave the county or stand trial. He moved to Stafford County VA where he and son in law Solomon Day bought and divided 500 acres of a plot known as the "Hope Grant" where he continued to farm tobacco. He lived there until his death around 1685.

Although exiled from MD Daniel was allowed to arrange for the sale of his MD property, which he did through intermediaries. However, it seems he never received any remuneration for those Maryland lands. (see Sources)

Ran out of room, below, but that contains the gist. Think I will disconnect her on Familysearch.

Unless and until someone can supply a decent source for "Elizabeth Margaret Streams", which I consider bogus, as mother of Daniel the Immigrant. I propose disconnecting her. Even the scraps that appear here and on Familysearch do not make sense. A British research checked the Canterbury St Pauls records and reported the following:

"The earliest record I have so far been able to find is the baptism on 28 November 1640 at Canterbury St Paul of William son of William & Elizabeth METTENEY (source Ancestry's Select Birth & Christenings). However, a surname such as William's is likely to be spelled in a variety of ways on both parish records and transcriptions of such. The parish register image of William's baptism is available to view at FindmyPast which is a pay per view site. There are also

Need help with how to merge someone with four different listings under four different surnames (Matheny, Mathena, Mathenia, Metheny). Which takes precedence and how do we note the three alternatives?
