William Mather was born in 1849 in St Helens, Lancashire, England. He was the son of Richard Mather and Ann (Birchall) Mather.[1][2]
By March 30th 1851, they were living at 8 John Street, Eccleston. William's father was a stone mason.

William's mother died in 1855, and was buried on 2 Jun 1855 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire. William's father died in 1858, and was buried on 16 Sep 1858 at St Thomas' Church in Eccleston, Lancashire.
On the night of April 7th 1861, William was visiting his half-sister Elizabeth at 10 Brook Street, St Helens.

In the 1881 census, his occupation was listed as "Builder employing labourers".
In 1891, he was living in Windle, Lancashire. He was a bricklayer.[1]
