Whereas mr. Thomas Matthewson of this Town of Scituate Departed this life on ye 23rd day of October last past and Died Intestate And Martha Mathewson Widow of the sd. Thomas Mathewson appeared before this Council and prayed that She might have the Administration of her sd. Deceased Husbands Personall Estate and procured Zechariah Rhoads and Edward Sheldon Esqr. for her Surety who were Accepted by the Councill and were all bound accordingly And Recevied from the Council a Letter of Administration on sd Estate in the following Words.
These are therefore to Authorize Order and Impower you the sd. Martha Mathewson to Take into your Possession Care and Custody all and Singular the Goods and Chattel Right and Creditts of your sd. Deceased Husband the sd. Thomas Mathewson and the same Administer according to Law and True and perfect accounts thereof to Render to this Council or their Successors in sd. office when you are thereunto Lawfully Called and in all other things Relateing the premises to Act and do as the Law Requireth and Impowereth and Administration and for your so doing this Shall be your Sufficient Authority Given at a Town Council &c.

And the above named Martha Mathewson personally appeared in Council and Declared on Engagement that She did set forth to the above Apprisers all the personal Estate of her sd. Deceased Husband the above name Thomas Mathewson that is come to her Knowledge and that if any thing further appear thereof She will Add the same to this Inventory Whereupon it is Voted that the above Written Inventory be accepted and allowed of and ordered to be Recorded.[4]
Some sources list the wife of this person as Martha Sheldon, while others say Martha Field. There is a genealogy book that claims Martha was Martha Field because Thomas Mathewson had a brother-in-law William Field. However, there apparently was a William Field married to Thomas's sister Mary Mathewson Field, so William Field might have been Thomas's brother-in-law through his sister Mary rather than through his wife Martha.[5]
