John Matthews was the son of Thomas Matthews and Mary Ann Boase and one of 12 known children. John was christened at Zennor on the 24th May 1858. 2
His father was a Farmer of 28 acres1 in Zennor, Cornwall.
John emigrated to New Zealand and settled at Ravenscliffe in the Wairau working as a Miner.
He married in 1884 to Mary Ann, daughter of Edward Clemens and Mary Ann Doherty of Picton. Seven children were born during their marriage.
He continued at mining at Stafford and then Picton. By 1911, John and Mary Ann had moved into the township living on Buller Street with John employed as a Bridge Carpenter.
John Matthews died in 1946 aged 88 and is buried at Picton cemetery. LAWN BLK 5 PLOT 97. [1]
