Archer Mathews was a Virginia colonist.

Spelling of Mathews with one t is corroborated by two hand-written documents, one is the permission slip signed by Archer Mathews and John Price Tillery, granting permission for his daughter Lettice to marry John, and the marriage certificate of John Price Tillery and Lettice Mathews is signed by Archer with one t in Mathews (see photograph).

Origin

Archer was born in 1744 at Augusta County, Virginia.[1] He was the seventh and youngest son of John Mathews and Elizabeth Anne Archer, daughter of Sampson Archer.[1][2][3] Archer's father was one of the first settlers at Borden's Tract in Augusta County.[3]

Family

Archer married to Leticia McClanahan.[1] They had seven children.[2] After his death, Leticia married, as her 2nd, to Joseph Keyser/Kayser.[4]

Children:[4]

  1. Elizabeth Mathews; mar John Mathews (her 1st cousin, son of George b 1739 and Ann Paul)[5]
  2. John Mathews
  3. Ann; mar Capt. Thomas Edgar
  4. George Mathews b: 25 May 1780 in Greenbrier County, Virginia
  5. Jane Mathews
  6. Lettice Mathews b: 1759

Greenbrier County

William and Archer inherited the old home place in Augusta County, but Archer sold his part to William.[2] William stayed on the old place and farmed it all his life.[2]

Brothers Sampson and George had established a trading post in the Greenbrier area, and Archer joined them in 1757 after the death of their father.[citation needed] Archer became one of the earliest magistrates of Greenbrier County.[1] He also viewed roads and sat on the county court.[1] Archer was one of the trustees who founded the town of Lewisburg in 1782.[2] .

Death and Legacy

Date of death after August 13, 1786 at Greenbrier County, Virginia. Executors, wife, Letitia, Capt. Thomas Edgar, Col. John Stuart.[1]

Record of the appraisement of Archer Mathew's estate was recorded in 1790.[1] So he presumably died that year.[1]

Alternative death date: Archer died ca 1796 and was buried at the Old Stone Church at Lewis Spring, Greenbrier County, Virginia (now Lewisburg, West Virginia).[6]

In the book "Lewisburg Landmarks," by Ruth Woods Dayton, 1957, there is a drawing of a home "The Echols Farm." Part of this home was a log cabin built about 1780 by Archer Matthews. It is about three miles north of Lewisburg, on the west side of Rt. 219. Matthews was a prominent man in Lewisburg until his death in 1786. There was no mention of his wife or children in this article. Noland 588

We currently have three daughters named Letitia or Lettice. I found one source which listed six children of Archer and another which said he had seven children, but unfortunately did not give their names.

We do have a birth date 1759 for a youngest daughter Lettice - but no other information about a possible other daughter of the same name or called Letitia.

Anyone have any information to help us resolve this question?
