Susannah Matthews was the daughter of John Matthews and ____ of Northampton County, Virginia. Susannah's mother is uncertain. She could have been the daughter of John's first wife Peggy ____, who died before 1751; but she was more likely the daughter of John's second wife Martha Stott, whom John married in 1751. Susannah, "wife of Daniel Bird" was named in her father's will, dated 15 Sep 1776, along with her brothers Custis, Levin, Richard, William, Jonathan, Kendall, and Michael (not of age); and her sisters Esther (wife of William Carey), Ann, and Rosanna (not of age). Susannah's father bequeathed "negro girl Hope" to Susannah in his will that was dated 15 Sep 1776 and probated 08 Apr 1777.
