Henry was born about 1861. He was the son of Richard Matthews and Claressa Unknown. He passed away about 1934 aged 73 years old.
OBITUARY MR. H. B. MATTHEWS - OLD RESIDENT OF KAITAIA & GRANDSON OF MISSIONARY The death occurred in the Mingonui County Hospital last night of Mr. Henry Blencowe Matthews in his 73rd year. He was the eldest son of Richard Henry Matthews, the eldest son of the Rev. Joseph Matthews, one of the pioneer missionaries who founded the Kaitaia Mission Station, the centenary of which is to be observed next Sunday. Mr. Matthews was the eldest surviving grandson of the Rev. Joseph Matthews. Mr. Matthews was born in Kaitaia on June 23, 1861, and his mother was a member of one of Kaitaia's oldest families. He was educated and lived here practically all his life, following farming pursuits. In January, 1882, Mr. Matthews married Miss Evelyn Subritzky, daughter of the late John Subritzky, an old resident of Awanui, In 1901 he married again. In 1915 Mr. Matthews sold most of his land in this district and moved to Auckland, but from 1926 he had resided most of the time with his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Farrimond, at Kaitaia. Mrs. Matthews died in December, 1926. Mr. Matthews took an active part in local affairs,, being a justice of the peace for many years, a member of the first directorate of the Kaitaia Dairy Company, and for some years chairman of directors. He was a member of the local Agricultural and Pastoral Association since its inception and was for a term chairman of the Kaitaia School Committee. An ardent botanist, Mr. Matthews was a recognized authority on native orchids, his collection being one of the most complete in the Dominion. In the declining years of his life ho was engaged in writing a text book on native flora. Mr. Matthews is survived by three daughters and four sons. The funeral will take place in Auckland. [1]
Divorced Evelyn in 1898 when it was revealed that his fourth child (of six) was fathered by his brother, Ernest Crowther Matthews. [2] In 1901 he remarried to Evelyn's widowed sister, Elizabeth Eleanor.
