Biography

U.S. Southern Colonies Project logo
Rachel Matthews was a Virginia colonist.

Rachel was born about 1717 (alternate birth date 1724) possibly in Orange County, Virginia. She was the daughter of John Mathews and Ann Unknown. No documentation has yet been found for her birth date or place. She was still living in Hanover County, Virginia, when the estate of her deceased husband was advertised for sale on 17 October 1792.[1]

Rachel is said to have married James Byars as second wife about 1742, location unknown.

Rachel was named in the will of her father, John Mathews, "of Forks of James River, [Augusta County, VA] Gent.," written 20 April 1757 and proved in Augusta County Court, 16 November 1757. She was bequeathed one shilling. Her last name is not specified, so it cannot be used as source for her marriage date.[2]

Land & Property Transactions

  • James and wife Rachel, "of Hanover County, Virginia" sold half of New Market Grist Mill on 8 February 1790.[3]
  • Byars, James, dec'd, his ex. (nfi) of Hanover, will sell his Negroes and PE (VGGA 17 Oct 92)[4] [nfi = no further information]

I think that the (Alias: Peggy - note in the Bio) is a mistake. - Peggy was the nickname for Margaret Gentry ( James 1st Wife 1715-1742), marr. abt 1734

Matthews-4244 and Matthews-3103 appear to represent the same person because: Matthews-4244 is an unconnected profile; she has the same name, DOB and death location as Matthews-3103
