The sudden passing of "Butch" Fraser Carlyle MATTHEWS, 32, of 50 Pleasant Street, Springhill, N.S., who lost his life in a fire in a hunting camp at South Brook, N.S., on June 4, 1976, came as a shock to family and friends. Born in Springhill, Oct. 17, 1943, he was a son of Evelyn Matthews and the late Chester Matthews. "Butch", as he was popularly known by his family and friends, was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed skin diving. He received his education in the Springhill Schools. At the time of his passing he was employed as a miner in the River Hebert Coal Mines. He was an adherent of St. David's Presbyterian Church. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two daughters; Darlene and Barbara; four sons; Troy, James, Joseph, and Darrell, all at home. Also surviving are two sisters, Audrey, Northport, N.S.; Jessie, Edmonton, Alta.; three brothers; Bedford, Darrell and George, all of Springhill. The remains rested at A.H. Brown Funeral Home from where the funeral service was held June 7, 1976, at 2 p.m., when the Rev. James Martell, St. Andrew's Wesley United Church officiated. Burial was made in Hillside Cemetery. The pallbearers were Dennis Calder, John Legere, William Babineau, Terry Bryan, Blaine Hayden, and Alan Hicks. The driver of the flower car was Mike Howlett.
