Biography

Sarah Matthews was born in 1839 at Oxford in Oxfordshire. She was the daughter of William Matthews and his wife Elizabeth, born Elizabeth Honour. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

In 1851 Sarah Matthews was living in Cross Keys Yard off Queen Street in Oxford with her parents William and Elizabeth and their other children. Her age was given as 11, implying a birth date in 1839 or 1840. Her birthplace was given as Oxford, Oxfordshire. She was at school. [2]

At the time of the 1861 census [7 April 1861; see next paragraph] Sarah was still living in Cross Keys Yard off Queen Street with her parents and their other children. Her age was given as 21, implying a birth date in 1839 or 1840. Her birthplace was given as Oxford. She was a dressmaker. [3]

Isaac Smith, a labourer, of Cross Keys Yard, son of Richard Smith, labourer; and Sarah Matthews, a dressmaker, of Cross Keys Yard, daughter of William Matthews, stone mason; were married at St Peter le Bailey parish church in Oxford on 7 April 1861. [4]

In 1871 Sarah Smith was living in Broken Hayes in Oxford with her husband Isaac and their children. Her age was given as 31, implying a birth date in 1839 or 1840. Her birthplace was given as Oxford. [5]

Isaac and Sarah Smith arrived in New Zealand of the ship Ballochmyle, 1874[6][7]
