Biography

James Matthews Sr.

Origin

James was born before 1690 in Wales.[citation needed]

Apparently the family story of Anna Ruth Matthews was that five Matthews brothers left England in about 1600 - 1650, and James was the name of one of the brothers:

The story told of our line of Matthews was that five brothers left England about 1600-1650 and came to America. The one we came from was James. The names of the other four are unknown. James had James Jr., then came William, Preston, Obediah, Robert, Thomas, Albert, Herman and me [Anna Ruth Matthews]. This is what my father, Herman, wrote down.[1]

Given the dearth of records from this time period I don't see how it's possible that these two could be seen as possible duplicates. UK records show many, many men named James Mathews who were alive at this time. I just searched FamilySearch.org for men named "James Mat(t)hews" born between 1640 and 1660 in England and I get 2,251 results. Searching in Wales returns another 78. I'm sure Scotland and Ireland will return even more.

I certainly appreciate your due diligence in catching this, but the odds are just not in favor of 2 men out of 2,251 being the same.

Aside from that I somewhat suspect that the James Mathews I created is from the area of Surrey, England. He shows a lot of interactions in the Virginia colony with families who were from that area. Maybe those interactions simply started in Virginia. Whether or not they did though there is still a huge pool of men named "James Mat(t)hews" born 1640-1660 (or estimated in that range) to choose from. To zero in on mine and the other one takes the extreme narrow view.

I've had people contact me before about the James in my tree being connected to this Anna Ruth Matthews and her "5 brothers" story before, but no one can offer anything other than supposition that there's a connection.

If I had a nickel for every story about 3/4/5 brothers coming to America I'd have a dollar or two.

A lot of similarities between Mathews-2568 and Matthews-3280 but not enough to definitively call them "duplicates". I have connected them as "unmerged matches" pending further research. If they are found to be two different people, they should be changed to "rejected matches" to prevent future attempts at merging, as they are very similar. If they are found to be duplicates, they should be merged so that all interested descendants can collaborate their research into the same profile.
