Notes

Note N66Mary Ames has advised that there is a recorded land tract sale for Daniel T. Matthews when he purchased his land in Hancock County on June 30, 1835. His 40 acres were located in Section 21, Meridian 4. Township 4 N and 5 W. Panther Creek runs through Section 21. In Harriett "Hattie" Matthews Fowler's poem, "Our Childhood Home," she mentions Panther Creek and Panther Flats as if they are nearby. Also at the top of the map provided by Ms. Ruth Bolt of the Hancock County Historical Society, 4N5W (Section 21) is shown in St. Mary's township.
Mary Ames has also provided the 1840 census information and her calculations below:
Daniel Matthews head of household...
Actual Information: Mary's calculations:
Males 1 (40-50) Daniel 45 yrs B. 1795
" 2 (10-15) Thomas 13 yrs. B. 1827
Elijah J. 10 yrs. B. 1830
Females 1 (30-40) Catharine 39 yrs B. 1801
" 1 (15-20) daughter B. 1820-1825
" 1 (10-15) Nancy J. 11 yrs. B. 1829
" 1 (5-10) Martha A. 6 yrs. B. 1834
" 1 (under 5) Catharine 1 yr? B. 1839
These all match the ages we have for the family based on the census in 1850, 1860 and 1870, except for the oldest daughter who was between 15-20. In 1850 she would have been married but we don't know her name. Daniel T. Matthews did not appear on the 1850 census for the obvious reason he died in 1846. There was a Daniel T. Matthews shown in the Nauvoo, Hancock County, Illinois Tax Index for 1842. It certainly ap;ears that Daniel T. Matthews is the father of our Thomas J. Matthews but family researchers are still looking for more information to support this, as of 10/28/02.
Ruth Bolt, Hancock County Historical Society, has also provided additional information on Daniel T. Matthews, including: a sheet from the Land Grant Book 109; Pages from the Will Box #16 (Daniel T. Matthews died intestate-without a will); A release from Catherine Matthews, Administrator, appointing Jonathan Browning, as the administrator of the will; Pages signed by Jonathan Browning; and Sale of property.
Mary Ames has advised: "Daniel T. Matthews was a soldier in Captain McKanrey's Company, Tenn.Mil in the War of 1812. The papers from the National Archives in Washington, D.D. (WO-6212) do not have the dates of service or his birth date but they do list his date of death as March 19, 1846."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Daniel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Daniel:
