Biography

Julia Ann MATHEWS, born circa 1800-1810 [Albany NY 1830 census, first ward] also in NEW YORK. Julia Ann Mathews was married 5 Aug 1821 at the Madison Ave, NYC Dutch Reformed Church to Lawrence CONNER, born 1796 [Munsell’s Annals of NY vol 10 p261] who was a typefounder and an ornithologist working in Albany [city directories] 1829-30 until his death at age 40 on 23 Aug1836, Albany NY. His widow, Julia Conner, continues to be listed through1837-38 in Albany city Directories.

Julia Ann Matthews (b c 1810 NY) was the daughter of Elias MATHEWS, an Innkeeper in 1812, Queens Co, NY census.

Elias Matthews was son of Richard Matthews, Queens Co NY in 1800 census. Richard Matthews'’ wife was dead by the time Richard Matthews wrote his will on 5 Nov 1815 [Early wills of Queens Co NY] Richard Matthews died before 12 Mar 1824.

1800 Feb 22 ? - BIRTH of Julia Ann Mathews as given on her burial record at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, Rhode Island. She had several marriages and is very 'inconsistent' re her age -- she frequently gave her birth in 1810, but she married in 1821 and clearly didn't wed at age eleven! 1820 census - the female child believed to be Julia Ann is born 1794-1804.

1810 US census, New York City, 7th ward, p 343 MATTHEWS, Elias 000011-01001 one free white male age 26-45 / b 1775 -1794 [an older brother of Julia Ann?] one free white male age 45 + [Elias Matthews b 1775 or earlier] one free white female of 10 and under 16 / 1804-1810 [must be Julia Ann] one free white female age 45 + [ b 1775 or earlier- assume she is wife Jerusha]

In 1821 JuliaAnn marries Laurence Conner. If age 21, she was born 1799-1800. Her son Elias M. Conner was born 1828-29. If she were 24 at his birth, she would be born 1804. age 28 if born 1800. [Name spelled Laurence in marriage record, but same record had other spelling errors. Probably went by Lawrence?]

1821 Aug 5 - MARRIAGE - LAURENCE CONNER Madison Ave. Dutch Reformed Church, NYC. "Laurence Conner, son of John Conner; with Julian/sic Mathews/sic, daughter of Elis/sic Elias Mathews, $1.87 1/2 or two French pieces, at 7/6 per piece. Sabbath evening." ---[LDS film 017475 - M50611 - 0981 The Madison Avenue Reformed Church in the city of New York, transcribed by the NY Genealogical and Biographical Society, vol 2, ed. Royden Woodward Vosburgh, NYC, March 1921 First (and only) indication of Laurence’s father’s name being John Conner, and verification Elias Mathews is father of Julia Ann.

Although Lawrence Conner was married in New York City, we would assume that was the home of the bride, not necessarily of the groom. And given Conner’s occupation as a typefounder, NYC would be a major city for that craft.

These NYC directory entries appear to indicate Lawrence & Julia Ann were in NYC from 1824-28:

1824-5 - Lawrence Conner, type founder, Wooster n. Prince. NYC directory 1825-26 - Lawrence Conner, type founder, Wooster n. Prince (no change) NYC directory 1827-28 - Conner, Lawrence, type founder, 80 Eldridge. NYC directory

1826-27 Longworth’s American Almanac, New York City Directory, 1826: "Matthews, Jerusha, widow of Elias, 334 Front." This is Julia Ann's widowed mother…also in NYC. [but there is no further trace of Jerusha in NYC directories of 1827-8, 1828-9, 1830-31.
