Joseph Mathews had to have been born before 1720 in order for his children to be of age in 1760 at which time they were landholders in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. He was likely born in Virginia -- in either Isle of Wight or Southampton county.
Joseph Mathews was named executor in the will of his father Hugh (which was probated in 1751), giving him “the plantation I now live on … I say I give the said Plantation to him & his Son Jacob Mathews & their Heirs”.[1]
That he married a woman named Elizabeth is indicated by a deed of sale in which he makes reference to "my wife Elizabeth."[2]
What is the source for "Stephenson" as her maiden name?
He apparently died after he wrote a will written 18 January 1791.[citation needed]
