Biography

John Kays Matthews was the son of Thomas Mathews and Mary Keys and was born in Ireland. ^[1] John emigrated to New York and was naturalized as an American citizen on 10 June 1859. ^[2] His naturalization was witnessed by his brother-in-law, Charles Perley. ^[3]

He worked inspecting steam boats, specifically, their boilers. ^{[4] [5]} John died in 1893. His obituary was published in the New-York Tribune announcing his date of death as 10 February 1893 in Mount Vernon, New York. ^[6] His will was probated 19 June 1893 naming his widow, Jennie V Mathews as his executrix. ^[7]

Marriage

John Kays Matthews married Jennie Viola Rogers Bennett on 13 April 1879 in New York, New York. ^[8] She had been a boarder (housekeeper), along with two young daughters in his home. He was 62 years old and she 36. According to the marriage record, her parents were Joseph Rogers and Elizabeth Bingham. ^[9] Her first husband was Isaac L. Bennett. ^[10]
