Facts

Christened 21 Mar 1779 at Deddington, Oxfordshire, England

William Matthews senior was a master weaver and family records in the parish church in Deddington go back many years.

Rizpah BAKER signed her marriage record with 'Her mark', which suggests she was unable to read and write. It also shows what remarkable woman she was to see that her children were well edcuated.

On her son Rev. Richard Matthews Death Record, she is named as his mother. Since her marriage date is BEFORE the birth of Rev. Joseph Matthews, it is a better fit for her to be his mother as well.

NEVERTHELESS on some of the children's baptism records the mother is named as either Isabella or Elizabeth. At this time NO marriages or deaths records for these ladies have been located. However these names could be the mothers of Rispah or William, or their siblings names.

British CENSUS records - show the family over the years.

In 1841, Rispah MATTHEWS is a widow, living in Woodstock, Deddington, Oxfordshire, England. She as about 6O years old. No occupation is given.

By 1851 Census Rispah MATTHEWS is a widow, still living in Deddington, Oxfordshire, England, but she is called a Pauper (Weavers Widow).

This evidence shows that William Matthews (1780 to 1827) the weaver NEVER had a widow called Eliza, who settle in New Zealand. William & Rispah Matthews had several children who settled in New Zealand, and this includes their son William Matthews (also a ropemaker, like his father) who had a wife called Mary Ann, who died in NZ. - as did William
