Biography

Isabella (Mathews) Dade was born in Suffolk, England.

Isabella was the illegitimate daughter of Fanny Matthews and her birth was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1864 in the Thingoe district.^[1]

Her mother married Frederick Plummer in 1867 and at the time of the 1871 census Isabella Plummer was with her maternal grandparents in Ixworth, Suffolk. It is unknown if she was visiting or lived with her grandparents.^[2] Her mother, step-father and her half siblings were in a seperate household in Ixworth.^[3]

Her mother died in 1879 and in 1881 Isabella, now called Isabella Mathews was again with her maternal grandparents along with her half-sisters, Mary and Hester Plummer.^[4]

Isabella Matthews married James Albert Fitch, a gunner in the Royal Artillery, and their marriage was registered in the Apr-May-Jun quarter of 1886 in the Ipswich district.^[5]

James died in India in 1899.

Isabella Fitch married Robert Dade and their marriage was registered in the Jul-Aug-Sep quarter of 1901 in the Ipswich district.^[10]

Their son Albert Robert Dade was born in 1903 and his birth was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1903 in the Ipswich district.^[11]

Isabella's death (age 89) was registered in the Jan-Feb-Mar quarter of 1954 in the Goole district.^[12]

In the 1871 census Isabella (age 7), Scholar, was the granddaughter of George Mathew in Ixworth, Suffolk.^[3]

In the 1881 census Isabella (age 16), Servant Domestic, was the unmarried grand daughter of George Matthews on Greyhound Lane, Ixworth, Suffolk.^[4]

In the 1901 census Isabella (age 35), Hand Budder Stay Factory, was the widowed head of household in Ipswich St Matthew, Ipswich, Suffolk.^[13]

In the 1911 census Isabella (age 43), At home, was the wife of Robert Dade at 5 St Andrews Terrace Goole, Goole, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (West Riding).^[14]

Research Notes

1. Isabella was born three years before her mother's marriage to Frederick Plummer. Although it is not certain, it seems unlikely that Frederick Plummer was her birth father since Isabella reverted to the name 'Mathews' after the death of her mother on the 1881 census. In all the registrations for the birth of her children she also used Mathews or Matthews and her LNAB.
